Elements of Design Value is when you use different darknesses or lightnesses in your design or artwork. Space is the area your design occupies which is called positive space the area with nothing in it is called negative space. Texture is when you make a design look like it has or does have a certain feel to it. Color is how you convey certain things to the viewer because certain colors invoke certain things in the human mind like red and anger or evil. Form is when your artwork or design has depth like it looks like you can reach out and touch it. Shape is what your art or design is made up of. Line is what you need to make any image or any kind of design. Principles of Design Rhythm/movement is when the elements are put a certain way so that it looks like it is moving or has a rhythm to it. Harmony is when the elements or colors look like they belong together. Proportion/scale is when you make some elements bigger or smaller in comparison to others. Balance is when you make the design asymmetrical so it is pleasing to the eye. Emphasis is when you make some thing stick out so it is the first thing the viewer sees. Repetition is when you use the same element over and over within a design to give it a more uniform look. Contrast is like when when you use opposites to draw attention to something.
